The Better Me Mentoring Program was established in March 2020 in Richland County, South Carolina, to support vulnerable students, particularly females aged 7 to 16, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program aimed to provide positive educational and emotional support to students in lower-income communities, where the pandemic had the greatest impact. Female students, in this age group, were especially vulnerable due to disruptions in schooling, reduced parental supervision, loss of school-provided nutrition, and increased screen time, leading to unhealthy lifestyle changes. According to Schleicher (2020), the pandemic's effect on education has been devastating, making the continued learning support offered by Better Me even more critical. By targeting female students in a developmentally sensitive period of their lives, the program focused on offering mentorship to help them navigate the challenges of remote learning, social isolation, and emotional stress. The Better Me Mentoring Program's ongoing efforts are vital for these students' academic and personal growth, providing stability and hope in uncertain times.
