Fairfield County, with only two supermarkets in Winnsboro, is a food desert where 11.3% of the population faces food insecurity. Factors like high living costs, expensive housing, unemployment, and low-wage jobs contribute to this issue. It significantly affects children, with 21.0% experiencing food insecurity, which is 42.8% higher than the national average.
Our Winnsboro-based food pantry serves the entire county, offering emergency food assistance for up to 90 days, and 30-day support for those in severe economic distress. Through our partnership with Door Dash, we provide home delivery to homebound residents and those without transportation.
After 37 years in a trailer, we aim to move into a larger building by 2025. To assist more families, we plan to stock additional food and extend our hours. We're also launching a nutrition program to teach clients and the community how to prepare simple, nutritious meals. To support these initiatives, we're seeking more donors and volunteers.
