The Free Medical Clinic was established in 2003 with the first full year in operation in 2004. The mission of the clinic is "understanding and serving the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved and their households living in Newberry County". The clinic is located across the street from Newberry County Memorial Hospital, and is striving to make a very positive change in the quality of life and longevity of those served by providing quality medical care with a focus on healthy living and wellness while teaching patients how to control diseases including three of the areas greatest medical issues: hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. In order to receive services, patients must prove financial eligibility, which is capped at 250% of federal poverty guidelines, must provide proof of residency in Newberry County, and have no medical insurance. Service categories are: (1) medical screening, diagnostics, and treatment; (2) referral to Newberry County Memorial Hospital and other care providers for additional diagnostics and treatment, including, but not limited to imaging, laboratory, and surgery; (3) medical case management; (4) pharmaceutical assistance; and (5) patient education. Those in need of specialty care are also served through a collaboration of other organizations and agencies. Sharing of resources with other free clinics in the state of South Carolina has been valuable to clinic patients throughout the state.
Our volunteer physicians, practitioners, nurses, and other medical staff have been dedicated to providing quality health care since 2003 and are going to continue in this important health care role until every person has the access to care that they deserve. In 2003, the clinic had only 35 patient visits. That number has grown by leaps and bounds. Last year, the clinic had 758 patient visits bringing the total number of patient medical visits since 2003 through October, 2023 to 28,2987 visits at the clinic.
