South Carolina Pride Movement

About this Organization

The South Carolina Pride Movement was founded in 1989 as the Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement (GLPM), and sometimes seen on banners as South Carolina Gay and Lesbian Pride March! Planning for the first march started the day after Hurricane Hugo in September of 1989 at a picnic on Dreher Island. On June 23, 1990, 2,000 members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies participated in the state's first Gay and Lesbian Pride March and Rally at the statehouse. Our first March in 1990 brought a sense of energy and excitement for something that was bigger than us. With 2,000 people marching down Main Street, the LGBTQ+ community made its presence known. The march became a movement, which led to action. In subsequent years, support spread to Greenville, SC; Augusta, GA; Charleston, SC. Over the past 35 years, our organizers have changed, and so have our locations, but our purpose is stronger than ever - "we're proud to say", "we belong", we stand "together", keep "be[ing] brave".
