Established in 1961, Historic Columbia originated with a passionate group of preservationists dedicated to rescuing the Ainsley Hall House, now known as the Robert Mills House. Today, the organization oversees five distinguished historic house museums nestled within 14 acres of public spaces and gardens: Robert Mills House & Gardens, Hampton-Preston Mansion & Gardens, Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home, Mann-Simons Site and Outdoor Museum, and the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House. Beyond stewarding these historic sites, the organization presents various programs throughout the year, including: · Behind-the-Scenes Tours of sites with historical and preservation significance · Walking Tours to discover the history of Columbia neighborhoods · Columbia Conversations lecture series featuring diverse speakers and subjects · …and much more Historic Columbia also works in the community to promote the preservation of historic buildings. We are advocates, advisors, and cheerleaders for Columbians engaged in historic preservation efforts.
